22Jul

Monday is beginner day at the Spokane Valley Senior Center, 2426 N Discovery Pl,. The 1:30 pm Slow & Easy class is an absolute beginner class, geared to new dancers and senior dancers who want a slower pace. The 2:15pm Beginner class is a little more challenging and faster paced.

The beginner classes will meet on Monday afternoons from 1:30-3:20 pm. We start with very easy dances for the first 40 minutes and then progress to a little more challenge, but still beginner dances. Judy Leads this class.

The Tuesday & Friday classes at the Western Dance Center, 1901 Sullivan Rd, Spokane Valley, are from 11am-1pm.  They provide an opportunity to practice the dances you know. There is an occasional teach, but the main focus is dancing. The lists are posted in the blog and emailed the week ahead. There are usually about 30 dances. No walk through unless requested. This class is led by Mary.

The Intermediate class at North Spokane Dance Center, 7424 N. Freya St, Spokane, meets on Thursdays from 6:30-8:30 pm. Doors open at 5:30 for practice.

Annmarie teaches this class.

The Line Dance Plus class at the Spokane Valley Senior Center, 2426 N Discovery Pl, is for dancers with experience. Dances are mainly at the improver and easy intermediate level. We do a variety of new dances and old favorites.

The Line Dance Plus class meets on Friday afternoon from 1:30-3:30 pm. Some dance experience is beneficial as this class is faster paced with more challenging dances than the Tuesday beginner classes. Judy leads this class.

JAMM Line Up is a monthly social dance usually held on the 3rd Saturday of each month from 6-9pm (2-5pm for the winter months) at the Western Dance Center at Sullivan Park in Spokane Valley. Some months the date may vary depending on availability of the facility or the JAMM facilitators (Judy, AnnMarie and Mary). We email the dance list (consisting of about 30 dances) at least a week in advance. Dances are a mix of levels, Absolute Beginner, Beginner, Improver and Intermediate, so that every one can participate. We often have floor splits so that beginners have the opportunity to dance an easy dance while the more experienced dance at a higher level. Facilitators lead the dances, and will do a walk through if necessary. We normally teach 2 easy dances during the first hour. Cost is $5 cash at the door. Snacks are welcome, but no peanut products due to allergies.

JAMM Country Line Dancing is an association of line dance instructors and enthusiasts connecting the 509 and 208 to the world of dance. We are members of the Square and Folk Dance Federation of Washington.

Our instructors hold classes at various locations in the Spokane-Coeur d' Alene area. We are working to develop a common core of dances and welcome everyone to our monthly social dance party called JAMM LineUp held the third Saturday of each month at the Western Dance Center.

Judy teaches free classes at the Spokane Valley Senior Center from 1:30-3:30pm on Mondays (beginner) and Fridays (Improver/Intermediate).

On Tuesdays and Fridays Mary facilitates a dance review class from 11a -1 pm at the Western Dance Center at Sullivan Park in Spokane Valley. Cost is $5.

Annmarie leads the Thursday evening North Spokane Dance Center class from 6:30-8:30 pm; doors open at 5:30pm for practice. Cost is $5.

The costs cover hall rentals and other expenses. The teachers/leaders donate their time and receive no pay. The purpose of these classes is to encourage people to remain fit and active in a fun social setting.

The benefits of line dance include:
  • Boosts memory
  • Improves balance and flexibility
  • Reduces Stress
  • Improves mood
  • Strengthens your heart
  • Increases energy and metabolism
  • Fun social activity
If you are mobile, can clap in time to music and like to have fun, you will love line dancing.
(We all make mistakes so you need to be able to laugh at yourself.)  Join us and give it a try!

Judy

Spokane Valley Senior Center Line Dance Leader

My spouse and I moved to the Spokane area from Texas in June of 2020 to be closer to family. I began teaching at the Spokane Valley Senior Center in October 2021 when it opened up after Covid. Prior to that, I taught line dance for 10 years at churches and recreation centers in Arlington, Texas, from basic beginner to Intermediate/advanced levels. As a member of the Board of the North Texas Line Dance Association, we sponsored the North Texas Line Dance Classic, a 2 day dance event in Farmers Branch, Texas. It has been a joy to sponsor groups to many line dance events including H.O.T., Texas Line Dance Jamboree, Line Up & Dance, the Vegas Dance Explosion, and a Caribbean Cruise. I have also hosted workshops, taught/led dances at many line dance events, and participated in several flash mobs. I look forward to sharing many more fun years of line dancing here in the Spokane area.

Annmarie

North Spokane Dance Center Line Dance Leader

Annmarie loves to line dance and is always promoting events for us to attend and sending out new dances for us to teach. She teaches the Thursday night class at the North Spokane Dance Center. She also has a horse and a sailboat that keep her busy when she is not at her full time job. You will recognize her because she is tall and dances in shorts or a skort, probably because of hot flashes. :)

Mary

JAMM Coordinator & Western Dance Center Leader

Mary hasn't given me any information to put here so I will make something up. Mary has been line dancing most of her life. She knows dances most of us have never even heard of, if she can just remember how they start. She likes to wear dresses and has a closet full from her working days. She also like cowboy boots. If there is an outdoor event with a band anywhere nearby, Mary will be there dancing, but you won't know who she is so I took her picture so you can recognize her.
